01

Single Soon | Selena Gomez

Now, this is one that is interesting - although I think anyone could have guessed that this would top my chart. I think I can confidently say that Selena is a fortune teller, because when Single Soon dropped out, I wasn’t single. But low and behold, one month later… I was.

I’m the only one that is SO happy that Selena is making happy songs again? I love her to pieces, and I’ve always wanted nothing but the very best for her, and I’m so happy that she is in a better place now. SG3 should be coming soon, and, as she said, she has a lot more to say now than that she is sad. I’m so looking forward to it, and if Single Soon is any indication, we are in for a treat.

02

Lavender Haze | Taylor Swift

You know, when Taylor said Meet me at Midnight, apparently, I really felt that… Because Midnights (2022) is my most listened album of the year! And I mean… deservedly so, as it is a great album. I got into Taylor’s music starting with Lover (2018), and I started to become a fan ever since. Lavender Haze is a great track to start the record with, and everytime I listened to it, it puts me in a special mood - something I’ve called the ‘Midnight Vibes’ as it is a feeling that carries throughout the record.

03

Maroon | Taylor Swift

I usually feel that track number two in an album is always one of the standout tracks, and Maroon is no exception. I think it is one of the highlights of the album, and it is a great followup to Lavender Haze. The beat at the beginning - which to me sounds very close to the beating of a heart - and how it carries through the entire song I think is a masterclass in track production. I’m a bit bummed out she left it out of the setlist of The Eras Tour, as I think it would have sounded incredible live. God gives, God takes, I guess…

04

Anti-Hero | Taylor Swift

Has anyone ever fitted so many relatable lyrics in just ONE song? I mean look at the material:

“It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me”; “I’ll stare directly in the sun, but never in the mirror”; and most importantly for me “Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism” (Impostor syndrome, anyone?).

Anti-Hero has become one of the year’s most streamed songs, and I can totally see why. Swift wraps these relatable lyrics on a very fitting tune, creating a package that just works.

05

You're On Your Own, Kid | Taylor Swift

As I said about Anti-Hero, I think that what has made Swift the powerhouse she is, it’s her ability to create narratives and tell a story you can relate to, even if you never felt what she was singing about. This song, for me, is an example of how her lyrics are relatable to me, even though we have had very different life experiences.

06

Karma | Taylor Swift

Getting to scream “I keep my side of the street clean, you wouldn’t know what I mean” at the top of my lungs during The Eras Tour stop in Buenos Aires was definitely one of the highlights of my year. The friendship bracelet I made out of it is probably second.

07

Mastermind | Taylor Swift

Again, the power of relatable storytelling: “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I've been scheming like a criminal ever since To make them love me and make it seem effortless [...] I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian 'cause I care”. I think a lot of people relate to this lyric and I’m no exception.

08

Bigger Than The Whole Sky | Taylor Swift

If Single Soon carried me through the ‘happy’ moments of a breakup, this song has carried me through the sad ones. Not because I necessarily think that the person in question was bigger than the whole sky, but because in many ways, the relationship itself was - for reasons I’ll keep to myself - and while it was a short time, it was definitely a lot more than that. In a lot of ways, this song helped me mourn the loss of that relationship, while not missing the person itself.

09

Would've, Could've, Should've | Taylor Swift

This song… I could talk for hours about this song… But I'll keep it short. There is a person who I will always sing this song to, and you know who you are, and you know this song is for you. “Now that I know, I wish you'd left me wondering”. Enough said.

10

My Mind & Me | Selena Gomez

My chart-topper of last year! What can I say that I haven’t said about this song, except that it still holds as good as it did last year. My mind & Me sometimes don’t get along, but on this we do: This is an exceptional song.

11

High Infidelity | Taylor Swift

I never cheated on anyone - never will - but this song really speaks to me. I really liked how she took the high fidelity concept and churned this song. I love word play as much as the next guy, so it is always nice to get to enjoy it in a song. With this song, we end TS’s streak on the chart. Impressive run if you ask me.

12

Rock Star | Hannah Montana

“Sometimes I walk a little faster in the school hallway, just to get next to you” are lyrics I never thought I would repeat over-and-over all day when I reached 23, but here we are. And, to be honest, deservedly so. Just a fun pop song, from a true pop (or should I say rock?) star. We are due for a Hannah Montana World Reunion Tour.

13

Old Blue Jeans | Hannah Montana

When Miley sang “Take away the mirrors, the limos, the lights cause I don't wanna dress up tonight”, I really felt that as a kid. And this has been - and I know this is controversial - my favourite song out of the 5 Hannah Montana records. Can’t really explain why, but the vibe this song has… I just love it very much. So much so that I wrote a song when I was younger - a lot younger - that was sung over this song’s instrumental.

14

You and Me Together | Hannah Montana

Probably a fan favourite, and among the best of HM’s songs. I’m surprised to see this one on the list. Didn’t realize I listened to it so much. Not that I’m complaining, as it is a great song.

15

C U Next Tuesday (Likely Stories) | Spice Girls

A new Spice Girls song since they officially released Feed Your Love (2021) and it spells out one of my favorite words? SIGN ME UP! I’ve been waiting YEARS to listen to this once, as any spice junkie like I am has known of its existence, so getting to hear it in its fully glorious - and unofficial - form is just a treat. There is something so timeless about the songs made by the Spice Girls during the Spice (1996) sessions, that is very dated at the same time. The sound is clearly 90’s, yet it remains fresh as it was back then when it was made. A testament to their craft and why they remain the best pop group of all time.

16

Already Over | Sabrina Carpenter

I’ve followed Sabrina through the years, and Eyes Wide Open (2015) and Thumbs (2016) are on heavy rotation in my music library. However, I never kept in touch with any of her releases past EVOLution (2016), and as soon as I got tickets to The Eras Tour, I listened to her latest album, emails I can’t send (2022) so I knew what to expect of her as the opening act of the concert. I’ve become quite fond of it, and this song has managed to reach a respectable position in this chart despite the fact I only listened to it during November.

It is a great song, and I wish I had known it sooner so I could have enjoyed it more when I listened to it live. A great shame (but hey, Sabrina, if you’re reading this: I promise I’ll sing this one at the top of my lungs at your next concert in Buenos Aires).

17

Make Some Noise | Hannah Montana

I have so many memories of playing Hannah Montana: Spotlight World Tour (2007) on my PS2 when I was a kid, and most of them revolved around this song, since I loved the choreography to it in the game. It is a great song, probably one of the strongest ballads in the entire Hannah Montana catalogue. Again, Hannah is due for a comeback.

18

Can't Get Blue Monday Out of My Head | Kylie Minogue

I wonder if Kylie knew she was going to make pop history when she said came out of a CD player during the 2002’s Brit Awards. What a banger of a remix this song is. It takes what is already a pop masterpiece and takes it to a new level. I can’t get enough of it for sure.

19

bad idea right? | Olivia Rodrigo

Yes, I went through a breakup this year, can you tell? Anyways, this is a very good song. Surprised it is on here - didn’t realize I listened to it so many times. I love how Olivia Rodrigo is able to capture that angst you feel when going through one, and how she can encapsulate it both in sound and lyrics, coupled together with some great gowns, beautiful gowns.

20

Strangers By Nature | Adele

I’m genuinely puzzled by this one. I would argue I listened to Love Is A Game a whole lot more, since it is my favourite track out of 30 (2021), but, at the same time, 30 is one of those records that you put on from start to finish, as it doesn’t have any true skips and it is a very enjoyable - and coherent - experience back to back. A nice song to round up this year’s list.
